Madagascar seeks Zim’s expertise in sustainable waste management

Story by Owen Mandovha, Business Reporter

The spinoffs of the 44th SADC Summit held in Harare last month have gone beyond the country’s borders with Madagascar now seeking to partner Zimbabwe in sustainable waste management.

President of the Island nation of Madagascar, His Excellency Andry Rajoleina was part of several Heads of State and Government who visited the Geo Pomona Waste to Energy Project on the sidelines of the 44th edition of the SADC Summit in Harare last month and was impressed by the transformative project that seeks to solve waste management challenges in urban areas.

A government delegation led by the Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of President and Cabinet, Engineer Amos Marawa, is in the capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo on a working visit to establish how two countries can collaborate in transforming the region’s waste management industry.

The delegation started by touring the Andralanitra landfill which has the exact hallmarks of the former Pomona dumpsite in Harare.

The landfill established in 1966 remains an eyesore in the vibrant city of Antananarivo.

The delegation proceeded to meet Madagascar’s Minister of Decentralisation and Territorial Development at his offices where the Geo Pomona Waste Management Company made a presentation of how it transformed the once filthy Pomona dumpsite.

During the SADC Summit, Heads of State and Government made a strong undertaking to harness regional cooperation in addressing challenges and growing the regional economy, hence the development marks the first huge spin-off from the SADC summit which saw President Emmerson Mnangagwa assuming the Chairmanship of the regional bloc.
