From wedding stage to provincial spotlight: Poet Lucy Gumbi’s rise to success

Story by Aifheli Mudau

A female poet from Insiza District in Matabeleland South Province is making a name for herself on the arts scene and has become a regular feature at public events across the province.

Fifteen years after seizing an opportunity to showcase her talent at a wedding, Lucy Gumbi is reaping the rewards of her passion for poetry.

The mother of two from Ntuthuko Village in Insiza District says her breakthrough came in 2023 when she performed at an event attended by President Emmerson Mnangagwa during the installation of Chief Maduna at Dekezi Secondary School.

Reflecting on her journey, Gumbi said the performance opened doors to bigger opportunities and transformed her life.

“I started performing poetry in 2010 after being given an opportunity at a wedding. However, what changed my life was performing at the installation of Chief Maduna in 2023, where President Emmerson Mnangagwa was the guest of honour. Although I was not paid on that day, I later began receiving invitations to perform at high-profile events, where I earned as much as US$500 per engagement. My life has improved significantly because I now get opportunities to perform at many gatherings,” she said.

Gumbi also encouraged women to pursue their artistic talents and take advantage of opportunities available to them.

“At most events, I notice that male artists dominate the stage. My message to fellow female artists is to be confident, showcase your talent and seize every opportunity that comes your way. We are receiving support as women artists, and we should make the most of it,” she added.

Under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), the Second Republic is committed to supporting artists through capacity-building initiatives and programmes aimed at promoting cultural industries and contributing to economic growth.
