BULAWAYO’s vibrant arts scene took centre stage on Thursday as established and emerging performers converged at the Large City Hall for the Bulawayo Arts Festival’s Kings and Queens Concert.

Held as part of Culture Week celebrations, the event celebrated artistic excellence, cultural heritage and unity, providing a platform for performers to showcase their talent before a wider audience.

Among the artists who graced the stage was Kaykid Umfanomsuthu, who described the festival as an important opportunity for both performance and cultural appreciation.

“This is a great opportunity to be at the Bulawayo Arts Festival because I got a chance to perform and also observe our culture and city since it is day four of Bulawayo day, which was celebrated on Monday,” Kaykid Umfanomsuthu said.

Veteran musician Siphathisiwe Ncube said cultural festivals play a crucial role in preserving traditions while nurturing the next generation of artists.

“This festival is important because it keeps our culture alive, and I am happy that the youth are also here learning from us. The energy I have comes from within because I was born a musician and I will die a musician. I just see myself dancing once I am on stage, and you cannot just sing without dancing along,” she said.

Bulawayo City Council Director for Housing and Community Services, Mr Dictor Khumalo said the festival was helping build confidence among emerging artists and preparing them for larger platforms.

“This week we are celebrating our city, and today marks the fourth day of the festival. The event is helping artists, especially those performing on stage for the first time, as it builds their confidence and prepares them for bigger stages both locally and abroad,” he said.

Organisers say the Bulawayo Arts Festival remains committed to promoting local talent and reinforcing the city’s standing as one of Zimbabwe’s leading cultural and artistic centres.
