PRESIDENT Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the fatal Suswe road traffic accident along the Harare-Nyamapanda Highway a state of disaster, as Government intensifies efforts to support victims and bereaved families following one of the country’s deadliest recent road crashes.

The declaration, announced by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honourable Daniel Garwe, paves the way for the mobilisation and coordination of emergency assistance and relief support for those affected.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Malawi-bound DNC luxury coach, carrying 62 passengers, including seven children and three crew members, was involved in the crash on Tuesday in Suswe, Mudzi District.

The accident claimed 17 lives, while 33 other passengers sustained injuries, with six reported to be in critical condition.

Honourable Garwe said the tragedy underscores the urgent need for strict adherence to road safety regulations in order to safeguard lives.

He said Government stands in solidarity with the affected families and remains committed to providing the necessary assistance, including burial support, to ensure victims receive dignified send-offs.

The declaration comes as authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
