ZIMBABWE is participating in the 88th session of the United Nations Inland Transport Committee, currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland, as countries chart the future of sustainable and efficient inland transport systems.
The high-level forum has drawn delegates from member states, United Nations agencies and international organisations to deliberate on strategies to modernise road, rail and inland waterway transport.
Zimbabwe’s delegation is led by Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Honourable Felix Mhona, who is expected to address a key ministerial panel focusing on innovation and automation in inland transport systems.
Running under the theme “Driving Innovation for the Future of Inland Transport,” the annual session will examine emerging issues such as automation, artificial intelligence and digitalisation, as well as the harmonisation of regulatory and policy frameworks to enhance efficiency and cross-border integration.
Zimbabwe’s participation signals its intent to strengthen transport policies, align with global standards and deepen regional and international cooperation.
Delegates are also expected to discuss strategic priorities aimed at improving safety, sustainability and resilience within inland transport networks, with a focus on supporting economic development while promoting environmental responsibility.
Through its engagement at the Geneva session, Zimbabwe is positioning itself to tap into global best practice and partnerships as it pursues the transformation and modernisation of its transport infrastructure.
