GOVERNMENT says preparations for this year’s Heroes and Defence Forces commemorations are at an advanced stage.
The update was given by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Zhemu Soda, during Tuesday’s Post-Cabinet Media Briefing in Harare.
The main national commemorations will be held at the National Heroes Acre and the National Sports Stadium, while provincial events will take place across the country.
Cabinet also received progress reports on several key national programmes, including the ongoing repatriation of Zimbabweans returning from South Africa.
Government said more than 108 000 returnees have so far been processed through the country’s ports of entry.
On the economic front, Cabinet noted that Zimbabwe has met all the requirements to benefit from a unilateral zero-tariff policy framework, under which more than 8 000 tariff lines are expected to qualify, supporting the country’s export growth strategy.
Cabinet was also informed of continued progress in agricultural production, with the Agricultural and Rural Development Authority accounting for more than 90 per cent of grain deliveries to the Grain Marketing Board, reflecting efforts to strengthen national food security.
Members also received an update on the construction of the Josiah Magama Tongogara Monument and Health Centre in Masinga District, Nyambani Province, Mozambique, in recognition of the late General’s contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
