OVER 1,000 people from Radway community in Mberengwa Central are set to experience improved livelihoods after the rehabilitation of Meredhesi Dam by government and its development partners.
As climate change continues to devastate communities, the rehabilitation of the Meredhesi Dam in Mberengwa, which dried out last summer, will ease water challenges in the area and usher in significant agricultural activities.
“I’m relieved to finally see the project we had long awaited taking shape. This will help us achieve what we want in society amid climate change,” said a beneficiary.
“We were struggling, especially during the last winter, for we couldn’t provide water sources for our livestock. Most of the villagers would take their animals some 10 to 20 km where there are water bodies,” said another.
Government says the rehabilitation of water bodies plays a vital role in transforming the agriculture sector in the district.
“We want to thank our partners for coming on board at the right time. Meredhesi is one of the life-changing projects, and it speaks to National Development Strategy One through infrastructure development for Vision 2030 to be attained. This project will play a huge role in making Mberengwa a greenbelt and partake in the national food security systems,” said Mberengwa District Development Coordinator, Vafios Hlabati.
The government is on a drive to promote dam rehabilitation and construction countrywide to increase food and nutritional security.
