FROM the shores of West Africa to football’s grandest stage, Cape Verde’s remarkable rise continues as the Blue Sharks intensify preparations for their maiden appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Drawn in Group H alongside Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, the tournament debutants will be eager to prove they belong among football’s elite.
The island nation has enjoyed a steady rise in African football, culminating in a historic qualification for the world’s biggest sporting spectacle.
Cape Verde have qualified for four of the last six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and reached the quarter-finals on two occasions, underlining their growing stature as one of the continent’s emerging football forces.
Leading the charge is captain Ryan Mendes, whose experience and leadership will be vital as the Blue Sharks navigate their first World Cup campaign.
The squad will also look to striker Dailon Rocha Livramento for goals, with the forward expected to shoulder much of the team’s attacking responsibility.
Cape Verde open their World Cup campaign against Spain on June 15 before facing Uruguay on June 22.
Their final Group H fixture is against Saudi Arabia on June 26, with the Blue Sharks aiming to make history on their debut appearance at the global showpiece.
