THE Second Republic’s drive towards universal health coverage received a boost on Wednesday after Vice President Colonel (Rtd) Dr Kembo Mohadi commissioned the newly constructed Joshua Nkomo Clinic in Gwanda, Matabeleland South Province.
The health facility, built by the Muduvuri Rehabilitation and Empowerment Foundation, is expected to improve access to primary healthcare services for residents, war veterans and people living with disabilities.
According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), Gwanda’s urban population has grown to more than 27 000, placing increasing pressure on existing health facilities, particularly Phakama Clinic.
Residents welcomed the new clinic, saying it will reduce congestion and improve access to medical services.
“We are happy that now there is a clinic dedicated to us. Sometimes it is difficult to be in a queue with a lot of people,” one resident said.
Another resident said liberation war veterans will benefit from free medical services at the facility.
“We are happy that at least we veterans of the struggle will be treated free of charge,” the resident said.
Businessman and philanthropist Cde Jimayi Muduvuri said the clinic was established in honour of the late Vice President Dr Joshua Nkomo and would provide free healthcare services to war veterans and people with disabilities.
“I have constructed this clinic in honour of the peace that was brought about by Father Zimbabwe Dr Joshua Nkomo. This clinic will give free medical service to veterans of the struggle and those with disabilities,” he said.
Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Honourable Sleiman Kwidini said the facility would strengthen healthcare delivery in the province.
“The opening of this clinic will significantly ease pressure on existing services, bring healthcare closer to the people, and improve overall service delivery. This milestone reflects the commitment of the Second Republic to leaving no one and no place behind as we advance towards achieving a modern and inclusive health system under Vision 2030,” he said.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Vice President Mohadi commended the Muduvuri Rehabilitation and Empowerment Foundation for complementing Government efforts in the health sector.
“The timely construction of Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Clinic will go a long way towards servicing the people of Gwanda, Matabeleland South Province and Zimbabwe at large. It will further reduce the distances travelled by our people to access healthcare, especially women and children,” he said.
He urged Zimbabweans to emulate initiatives that support national development and improve social services.
The Joshua Nkomo Clinic joins several other health institutions established by the Muduvuri Rehabilitation and Empowerment Foundation across the country, including facilities named after Chief Rekai Tangwena, Robert Mugabe, Simon Muzenda, Ndabaningi Sithole, Dr Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa, Mama Mafuyana, Herbert Chitepo and Josiah Tongogara.
