HEAD of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) delegation to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Aly El-Hefny has hailed the media as a vital bridge between government and citizens, saying responsible journalism plays a central role in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.
Ambassador El-Hefny made the remarks during an engagement between the APRM delegation and Zimbabwe’s media representatives in Harare this Thursday.
the African Peer Review Mechanism delegation met Zimbabwe’s leading media players to discuss governance, transparency and the role of the media in shaping national development at a local hotel in Harare.
The engagement brought together editors and senior journalists from the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation(ZBC), Zimpapers, Alpha Media Holdings, and New Ziana, all sharing perspectives on how information and accountability influence Zimbabwe’s governance landscape.
“Zimbabwe’s participation in this targeted review demonstrates its commitment to transparency and continuous reform in managing public resources and promoting equitable economic growth,” Ambassador El-Hefny said.
“This review assesses how national economic policies and institutions uphold fiscal discipline, budget transparency, anti-corruption measures, and citizen participation. It aims not only to highlight achievements but also to propose practical reforms that strengthen efficiency, accountability, and trust in public institutions.
“The media plays a vital role in this process as they bridge between the government and its citizens. Through factual reporting, constructive analysis, and responsible journalism, the media promotes transparency, it ensures that governance remains responsive to public needs. I therefore encourage continued professionalism and integrity in supporting efforts toward accountability and reform.”
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ambassador Albert Chimbindi, said the review offers Zimbabwe a platform for self-reflection and continuous improvement in governance.
“This review process presents a valid opportunity for self-reflection, learning, and continuous improvement. It allows us as a nation to consolidate the gains we have made in governance and to align our systems more closely with the aspirations of our people and the principles of our constitution,” he said.
“I am confident that through collective effort, partnership, and the spirit of unity that defines our nation, the targeted review process will yield meaningful outcomes This is in line with our national objective of a just, free, and democratic society in which people should work properly.”
As the African Peer Review Mechanism continues its consultations in Zimbabwe, today’s dialogue with the media reinforces one clear message, good governance thrives when government, citizens, and the media move together.
