Government extends support to Gweru elderly through Independence Ball initiative

PROCEEDS from this year’s Independence Ball have been channelled towards assisting elderly residents in Gweru, complementing Government’s social protection programmes for vulnerable communities.

The initiative has seen elderly beneficiaries receive food hampers, blankets and other essential items aimed at easing the burden of rising living costs.

Beneficiaries welcomed the support, saying it had come at a critical time.

“As the elderly, we are very grateful to government for this gesture, remembering us in times of need.”

Another recipient said:

“We have received food, staff, blankets and all, which have come at the right time. The leadership has been consistent in delivering to our community as the elderly.”

Government says the initiative complements existing social safety net programmes designed to support vulnerable groups.

Mkoba North legislator, Honourable Edgar Ncube welcomed the intervention.

“We are grateful for this initiative from the President, which is assisting our vulnerable community.”

Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube, said the programme reflects Government’s commitment to inclusive development.

“Our President says no place should be left behind, and we can not leave Ascot. We believe through this, we can assist the elderly and all the vulnerable constituencies.”

The distribution of Independence Ball proceeds forms part of broader efforts to strengthen social protection and improve the welfare of vulnerable citizens while promoting inclusive development.
