ZIMBABWE is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable food systems transformation, with the inaugural Food Innovation Conference underway in Harare.

Hosted by the Harare Institute of Technology, the conference has brought together researchers, industry players and policymakers to explore innovative solutions aimed at strengthening food security and advancing sustainable development.

Held under the theme “Sustainable Food Innovative Approaches for the Future,” the event is showcasing technologies designed to improve food production, processing and distribution while safeguarding the environment.

Experts say the conference comes at a critical juncture, as the country increasingly leverages science and innovation to build resilient food systems in the face of climate change and population growth.

Deliberations on the opening day focused on the application of digital technologies, data science and energy-efficient processing methods to enhance food and nutrition security, particularly for smallholder farmers.

The conference is also examining sustainable food systems, the One Health approach and food safety, with researchers presenting findings on indigenous crops, nutrition and disease prevention.
