Zim junior tennis players eye ITF J30 title

BULAWAYO – ZIMBABWE’S junior tennis players are determined to make a strong showing at the second round of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) J30 Tournament currently underway in Bulawayo, with the ultimate goal of claiming the title.

The trio of Chanel Zhuwakini, Akeelah Khanye, and Melissa Mavhenyengwa have all secured places in the second round after posting impressive victories in the opening matches.

Zhuwakini made light work of Thandiwe Nkala, winning 6-2, 6-1, while Khanye overcame compatriot Tatum Venter with a 7-5, 6-0 scoreline.

Mavhenyengwa, showing true resilience, fought back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 against Paballo Chuene, booking her spot in the second round.

“I already know what I did wrong in the last tournament. I am ready to improve and go all the way to the final. I am hoping to win the doubles finals as well. These tournaments help with my fitness, ensuring I stay in shape for any sport,” Zhuwakini said.

Akeelah Khanye revealed that adopting an underdog mindset helped her perform better.

“I feel good. I wanted to be an underdog, so I told myself that I had nothing to lose, and that mindset helped me win.”

Mavhenyengwa has set her sights on reaching the finals to improve her ranking and qualify for larger tournaments.

“By the end of this tournament, I would like to reach the finals, which will raise my points and help me qualify for bigger tournaments.”

While South Africa dominated the opening leg of the tournament, the Zimbabwean players are determined to turn the tide and make their mark on home soil, with the hope of claiming bragging rights in the region.
