Zim Cricket courts new counties

Story by Raynald Ngwarati, Sports Reporter

ZIMBABWE Cricket is working closely with the England and Wales Cricket Board after County Cricket side, Durham, arrived in the country for a three-day series at Harare Sports Club.

True to the success of the re-engagement agenda, County Cricket outfit Durham are back in Zimbabwe for the third time in four years, as they prepare for the upcoming County Cricket season in the United Kingdom.

Durham who were in the country around the same time last year are playing a three-day match against Zimbabwe A at Harare Sports Club.

While the side seeks a competitive edge when they return to Britain, the bigger picture out of the affair is the reinforced relations between Zimbabwe Cricket and the England and Wales Cricket Board.

“Marcus, the Director of Cricket at Durham really worked hard to bring us here for the first time. COVID hit us the first time but we were very clear that we wanted to come back,” said Durham County Cricket Club Head Coach, Ryan Campbell.

The two sides confirmed that they are reaping rewards from the partnership.

He added, “Hundred per cent we’re here to promote the growth of cricket in Zimbabwe. We came here last year and had such a great time, we actually learnt so much about the game here. For the guys that have been here before I know how the passion that Zimbabwe Cricket has. I’ve been following Zimbabwe Cricket for a long time now and the success that we’ve had as Durham last year back in the county competition we trace it to having a good tour here.”

The relations between Zimbabwe Cricket and the England and Wales Cricket Boards are back on track, with Zimbabwe set to tour England in 2025 for the first time in two decades.
