The Zimbabwe national archery team and development squad arrived back home over the weekend after scooping bronze in the African Union Sports Council Region Five tournament in Namibia.

The victorious team touched down at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in two separate delegations on Sunday and Monday.

The team scooped bronze and some individual medals at the Region Five games which see Southern African countries competing for honours in the sport.

Upon arrival, the team could not hide their excitement after clinching third spot in the region.

“I am very happy to represent my country and come back with a medal,” captain, Musa Urenzvi said.

Christiano Uriri said, “This is special and I will continue to work hard as the competition has motivated me.”

“I’m honestly really honored and proud of our team because even though we did a strong event during the competition, we still managed to overcome and especially for me, I was going through a lot of things emotionally. And I’m just happy that I was able to control my emotions and then actually execute on me, you know,” noted Garth Walveren.

One of the coaches Ray Funani expressed satisfaction with the performance with target now on hosting the event in Zimbabwe in 2026.

“We are very pleased with that, and our development team did really well. We had a top archer in Jonathan, who spoke a little bit earlier and we also had one of our boys, Andrew, and he finished in the top ten of the whole tournament, so that’s a really good achievement for him,” Funani said.

The country’s national team clinched bronze in the 3D category with one of the budding talents Andrew Manning who finished nineth on the overall rankings.

The developmental squad also put in a brilliant performance which is expected to be the base of archery in the country going forward.
