Tennis Zimbabwe eyes Davies Cup Group II reinstatement

TENNIS Zimbabwe has named a five member team to take part in the Davies Cup Africa Group three tournament which kicks-off in South Africa this Wednesday.

Former Zimbabwean top seed, Takanyi Garan’anga leads Team Zimbabwe at the Davies Cup which tees-off this Wednesday in South Africa.

Youngsters Takura Mhwandagara, Benedict Badza, Liberty Nzula and top seed Benjamin Lock are part of the tem but budding sensation, Mehluli Sibanda misses out on the tournament through injury.

The team arrived in South Africa on Monday from different ATP and ITF Tournaments which were part of their preparations for the Davies Cup Africa Group Three tourney.

Zimbabwe is in Pool B and will clash with Namibia this Wednesday before facing Benin and Senegal in their other group matches, whilst Pool A features South Africa, Cote D’Ivoire, Algeria and Togo.

The tournament, which is being hosted in South Africa at TUKS Tennis Courts at the University of Pretoria will see three teams being promoted to the Euro-Africa zone while two teams will be relegated to Africa Group Four.

Zimbabwe will be aiming to be among the top three as they eye reinstatement in the Euro-Africa group that they were in at the beginning of the year.

The tournament which is being played from 9 to 12 August 2023 serves as an opportunity for Zimbabwe to overturn a 3-2 home defeat in the hands of Uruguay in February 2023, which resulted in them falling down the perking order.
