SENEGAL head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup determined to cement their status among world football’s elite as they seek a strong campaign on the sport’s biggest stage in Mexico, Canada and the United States.

The Lions of Teranga arrive at the global showpiece carrying both the pride of recent continental success and the motivation to prove themselves following the controversy surrounding their 2026 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, which remains the subject of an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

With a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging stars, Senegal are widely regarded as one of Africa’s strongest contenders at the tournament.

Leading the charge is captain Sadio Mané, Senegal’s all-time leading scorer with 53 goals in 126 international appearances.

The 34-year-old forward, who now plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, returns to the World Cup stage determined to guide his country deep into the competition.

While no longer at the peak of his pace, Mané remains a key figure whose leadership, experience and ability to influence major matches continue to make him one of Africa’s most respected footballers.

At the back, Senegal will rely on the experience of defender Kalidou Koulibaly, whose commanding presence and organisational skills remain central to the team’s defensive structure.

In midfield, veteran Idrissa Gueye is expected to provide energy, discipline and ball-winning ability, while goalkeeper Édouard Mendy brings invaluable experience from both international and club football.

Head coach Pape Thiaw has also injected youthful energy into the squad, creating a balance between experience and emerging talent.

Crystal Palace winger Ismaïla Sarr is expected to provide pace and creativity in attack, while striker Nicolas Jackson will be tasked with delivering goals at crucial moments.

Rising stars Pape Matar Sarr of Tottenham Hotspur and Ibrahim Mbaye, an 18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain academy product, are among the young talents expected to play important roles during the tournament.

Senegal have been drawn in Group A alongside France, Norway and Iraq in what is widely viewed as one of the competition’s most challenging groups.

The Lions of Teranga begin their campaign against France on June 16 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in a fixture that rekindles memories of Senegal’s famous 1-0 victory over the defending champions at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

A positive result against the French could provide the perfect platform for progression to the knockout stages.

Senegal will then face Norway on June 21 before concluding their group-stage campaign against Iraq on June 26 in Toronto, Canada.

With a talented squad, experienced leadership and growing confidence on the international stage, Senegal will be aiming not only to advance beyond the group phase but also to make a significant impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
