THE Zimbabwe Sables defeated Zambia’s Copper Eagles 17-7 in the second match of the Zambezi Challenge at Hartsfield Stadium in Bulawayo on Saturday.

The encounter marked the return of international rugby to Hartsfield Stadium after an eight-year absence, with a large and enthusiastic crowd turning out to support the national team.

“It’s my first time at Hartsfield. My husband supports rugby and I must confess I really enjoyed watching the Sables,” said one fan.

“We are happy with the win as it boosts our confidence. Matches between the two sides are always tough contests,” added another supporter.

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) said the Zambezi Challenge forms part of the team’s preparations for upcoming international assignments.

“Winning is in our DNA, so coming to Bulawayo was made even more special by this victory. We are focusing on thorough preparations as we have important international fixtures ahead,” said ZRU General Manager, TJ Chifokoyo.

Principal sponsors Nedbank reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Sables on their road to the World Cup.

“As Nedbank, we are extremely proud of the team. They have done the nation proud, and we were pleased to support back-to-back matches as part of preparations for next year’s World Cup in Australia. This programme began in 2019, and many of the players featured today are products of that initiative,” said Nedbank representative Joel Gombera.

The first half ended goalless in a tightly contested encounter. Zimbabwe broke the deadlock in the second half before Zambia responded with a try of their own. However, the Sables asserted their dominance in the closing stages to secure a convincing 17-7 victory in front of an appreciative home crowd.
