GOVERNMENT has intensified efforts to modernise the country’s road network, with resurfacing works on the 35-kilometre Glendale–Nzvimbo Road in Chiweshe, Mashonaland Central Province, now underway.
The project, which forms part of the ongoing national infrastructure rehabilitation programme, has been welcomed by residents and transport operators who say the upgraded road is already improving travel efficiency and safety.
Heavy machinery has moved onto the route as contractors work to restore the key road link connecting Glendale and surrounding communities in Chiweshe.
Residents say the rehabilitation exercise is easing transport challenges that had affected communities for years.
“We welcomed the road rehabilitation. It has improved travel already, and we are taking shorter travel time. This is a good development for our area, and cars are moving easily now, but we would want speed humps because vehicles are now speeding,” Majome village resident Clayton Homwe said.
Public transport operators also expressed optimism that the resurfacing project will reduce vehicle wear and tear while improving road safety.
“I’m a bus driver, and I’m happy that our Government is building roads. They should extend them further. We are also happy with the resurfacing as it will reduce accidents and make the road safer. However, we also hope other damaged roads, like the one to Musarara village, are repaired as well,” bus driver Washington Dangirwa said.
Contractors undertaking the works say the project is expected to be completed within the next two months.
Flashdance Madzudzo, the IMC Construction, Asphalt Supervisor said the rehabilitation programme is being carried out in line with Government’s broader infrastructure development agenda.
“We are working in line with the vision of His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa of building our roads kilometre by kilometre. We are resurfacing 35 kilometres of the road from Glendale to Chiweshe. We started at Rosa, going towards Glendale, and we are also going to construct a road that reaches the Rosa Clinic,” he said.
The Glendale–Nzvimbo rehabilitation programme is among several major infrastructure projects currently underway in Mashonaland Central Province, including the dualisation of the Harare–Angwa–Kanyemba Road.
Authorities say the road works are aligned with the National Development Strategy Two (NDS2), which prioritises infrastructure modernisation as a catalyst for economic growth, improved connectivity and enhanced service delivery.
