HARARE – AS Africa prepares to commemorate 62 years since the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), Namibian President Her Excellency Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called on African nations to collaborate in preserving and narrating the continent’s liberation story.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is on a State visit to Zimbabwe, toured the Museum of African Liberation in Harare this Tuesday.

The museum, currently under construction through the efforts of the Institute of African Knowledge (INSTAK), is poised to be a continental archive of the African liberation struggle.

“I was truly impressed by the work being done here. It is very important that African countries actively contribute to this museum. It gives voice to our shared history, provides a platform to heal from the past, and offers inspiration to move boldly into the future,” she said.

The museum, an iconic Pan-African initiative, is intended to document and showcase Africa’s journey from colonisation to self-determination, promoting historical awareness and continental pride.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasised that Africans must take the lead in telling their own stories, a narrative historically shaped by external forces. She stressed that owning the liberation narrative is central to preserving Africa’s heritage and shaping its destiny.

The visit comes ahead of Africa Day on May 25, which this year will be marked under the African Union’s 2025 theme: ‘Year of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.’

The theme seeks to address historical injustices while highlighting Africa’s ongoing journey towards equity, unity, and inclusive development.

Zimbabwe and Namibia continue to enjoy cordial relations rooted in a shared liberation history and bilateral cooperation across various sectors including education, agriculture, defence, and tourism.
