PRESIDENT Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa has conferred national hero status on retired senior military commander Major General (Rtd) Herbert Chingono, and war veteran Cde Elison Mupamaonde, officials have confirmed.
Ambassador Raphael Faranisi, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, confirmed the development in a telephone interview with ZBC News Monday evening.
Major General (Rtd) Chingono passed away Monday, while Cde Mupamaonde died on March 3.
Mourners are gathered at Pentland Farm in Mazowe to pay their respects to Major General (Rtd) Chingono, while tributes for Cde Mupamaonde are being held at Chipiri Farm in Centenary.
Details regarding the burial arrangements for the two national heroes will be announced in due course.
