Jason Muvevi murder trial nears conclusion as judgment date set

Story by Peter Chivhima

THE High Court is set to deliver judgment in the high-profile serial murder case involving Jason Muvevi, who is accused of killing four people during a series of violent attacks in Hwedza in 2023.

Muvevi, of Ruzane Village in Hwedza, is facing multiple murder charges linked to the fatal shootings that shocked the nation in January 2023.

The trial, which commenced in March this year, heard chilling testimony detailing the circumstances surrounding the alleged killings.

According to the prosecution, Muvevi allegedly stormed an Apostolic shrine in Hwedza following a dispute with members of the church over alleged prophecies before opening fire and killing the sect’s leader, Chrispen Kanerusine.

The court also heard that Muvevi allegedly shot and killed Inspector Maxwell Hove, who was then the Officer Commanding Hwedza Police Station.

A bartender, Munashe Majani, was also reportedly gunned down during the attacks.

Prosecutors further allege that Muvevi’s violent spree began in 2022 when he allegedly murdered Nyarai Round under brutal circumstances.

Following the killings in 2023, Muvevi allegedly fled the country in an attempt to evade arrest before he was apprehended two days later in neighbouring Mozambique.

During his appearance before the High Court in March, Muvevi claimed that goblins were responsible for his alleged actions.

His legal representative, Dr Jacqueline Sande, confirmed to ZBC News on Tuesday that the High Court is now ready to hand down judgment in the matter.
