Home grown solutions identified as vital cogs in combating HIV

Story by Bengani Ncube

A new behavioural strategy has been implemented in Mashonaland Central province as a way of curbing and reducing HIV & AIDS infection in a province with high prevalences of HIV and teenage pregnancies.

Speaking to journalists during a National Aids Council media tour, Mashonaland Central National AIDS Council manager, Mr Edgar Muzulu highlighted the issue, citing alarming teenage pregnancy rates.

Concerned by alarming teen pregnancy rates, traditional leaders in Mashonaland Central sprang into action.

Chief Bushu of Shamva District said when he was installed as Chief, teen pregnancies were high and was a cause for concern in the district a sentiment echoed by Chief Rusambo from Rushinga District.

In response, they launched the “Not In My Village” initiative, promoting Ubuntu values, reducing gender-based violence, and ending child marriages.

Zimbabwe has made remarkable progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS, achieving the UN’s 95-95-95 targets three years ahead of schedule.

This impressive feat means that 95% of people living with HIV know their status, 95% of those who know their status are on treatment, and 95% of those on treatment have suppressed viral loads.
