Government intensifies efforts to combat drug abuse

GOVERNMENT has reaffirmed its commitment to combating the scourge of drug and substance abuse, with various strategies being put in place to curb the growing menace.

The issue of drug and substance abuse which continues to affect lives of youths and disturb the family set-up, took centre stage during the National Assembly Question and Answer session this Wednesday.

The debate underscored the urgent need for effective interventions to tackle the growing social ill, with government outlining strategies put in place to address the crisis.

“The government will soon deploy drones at the country’s borders to curb drug and substance abuse. However, we must all work together to eliminate this menace. It is heartbreaking to see many lives lost due to drugs. The government remains committed to punishing offenders and ensuring a safer society,” Acting Leader of Government Business who is also the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Honourable Felix Mhona.

“We are in the process of constructing rehabilitation centres across the country so that we keep those found abusing drugs,” Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care Honourable Sleiman Kwidini said.

Government’s road rehabilitation programme also came up for debate.

“We are not going to fold our hands but we are going to run around to rehabilitate our roads. We are also going to complete the Harare-Chirundu Highway and other highways,” Honourable Mhona said.

Government also reaffirmed its commitment to reducing malaria-related illnesses and deaths as well as providing a healthier environment for the citizenry.

“Currently, we are distributing insecticide-treated mosquito nets, conducting indoor residual spraying campaigns, and implementing community-based education and awareness programmes,”Honourable Kwidini stated.

Other issues debated in the August house this Wednesday include the rise in cases of suspected ritual killings and exclusive prospecting orders.
