CABS Candidates Chess tournament uncovers talent

THE curtain came down this Sunday on the 3rd edition of the CABS Candidates Chess tournament in Bulawayo, exposing idle chess talent dotted around the country.

The tourney had three winners Tehiller Makwiranzou in the Prestige section, Ropafadzo Dube walking away as the ladies champions and Tanaka Katsande crowned as champion in open section.

Held out of Harare for the first time, the tournament continues to grow as non-rated players showcase their talents.

“I am at loss of words to express my feelings. I have lost five times but I am happy, patience pays,” said Tehiller.

“”I am a chess player from UZ. II have not been doing well but this win will motivate me to scale dizzy heights,”

“It feels great to be crowned the winner of this tournament which had a huge subscription,” noted Katsande.

More than 150 players turned up for the tournament, showing how much the sport is growing.

Zimbabwe Chess Federation’s vice president Elvis Shora said “As the new ZCF executive, we realised that the sport can actually grow bigger and better. Our job is to facilitate the development of the sport so we will roll out intensive programmes working with sub associations.”

The annual tournament enables players to be rated by the World Chess Federation.
