Bulawayo on drive to professionalise pool

Story by Mthokozisi Dube

THE Bulawayo Pool Association (BPA) has embarked on a drive to professionalise the sport, viewed more as a pub hangout activity.

Previously played by two district powerhouses, Entumbane and CBD, pool is slowly gaining popularity in Bulawayo with the emergence of Reigate district.

Bulawayo Pool Association (BPA) is also holding tournaments at reputable venues as part of a broader plan to shed off the pub tag.

BPA spokesperson, Ozzy Dziko said, “As an association, we are involved in spreading the game, and we want to take the game into schools, but we need to shake off the perception of viewing the sport as an unorganised activity. We appeal to authorities to help us play in venues where families can come and enjoy the game.”

Having staged an Easter tournament which was won by Entumbane, seasoned pool players like Steven Paswani, Blessing Muzarurwi, Christine Sengwe, and Priscilla Chisoro went on to feature in a tournament held in China, something which has gone on to motivate budding pool players.

“As budding players, we normally like playing regularly, and we are happy BPA has been holding more of these tournaments, something which will help grow the sport,” said a pool player, Adonia Ndlovu.

Meanwhile, the Bulawayo Provincial Pool League is now in week 5 with Entumbane jointly tied with Dragons pool club on 12 points.
