AN Olympic-size stadium is set to be established in Bindura as part of the National Sports Academy (NSA) which was mooted by the Second republic.
The Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) is chasing a three-year target for the construction of an Olympic-size stadium in line with its mandate of housing the national sports academy.
BUSE’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Eddie Mwenje announced a golf tournament will be held in Harare on 14 March to help complement efforts by Treasury and the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education in fundraising for the ambitious project.
“Buse was chosen by the government to house the NSA so that we could assist the nation in sports development, talent identification and grooming of talent and that’s the reason why we are having this golf tournament on 14 March. The NSA is not an ordinary facility, we have to have an Olympic standard tartan track, an Olympic standard swimming pools and everything has to be to the standard therefore, the nation has to rally behind this important facility.”
The initiative has come at a time BUSE is celebrating 25 years of existence with students and businesses pledging to contribute to the important establishment.
In its short existence, the academy has produced products like 2024 Olympian Tapiwa Makarawu and government is fully backing the academy.
“The university has also emerged as a formidable force in sports nurturing and developing athletes such as Tapiwa MakaraWu and David Nyamufarira. These remarkable athletes show how BUSE continues to shape the future of sports in Zimbabwe,” BUSE’s director of Economic Affairs Mr. Levi Katambarare said.
The National Sports Academy, whose patron is President Emmerson Mnangagwa, targets to position Zimbabwe on the international sports map by employing professional trainers, modern facilities and scientific methods to developing high performing athletes.
