Bulawayo afro-fusion artist secures Germany performance slot

A rising Afro-fusion artist from Bulawayo is making notable strides in the music industry as he prepares to take his talent to an international audience.

Nigel Landelani Thole, popularly known as Macala Macala, is steadily building his presence on Zimbabwe’s music scene with a distinctive Afro-fusion sound.

The Bulawayo-based artist began his musical journey in 2023 and says the early stages were challenging, as he had to familiarise himself with studio recording, video production and the broader demands of the industry.

“My music journey has been a challenge since 2023. I did not understand studio sessions, music videos or even travelling. In 2025, I met Mzoe 7 and we worked on a song titled Ungamthanda. Within that same period, we recorded another track titled Angisalali Ekhaya. Mzoe 7 recognised my talent and mentored me significantly. In February this year, I met FAC Productions, signed a contract with them and went on to produce a seven-track album featuring songs such as Ngiyabonga, Uvalo, Shela, Ngifuna Wena, Wena and Mama,” said Macala.

Through mentorship and collaboration, Macala has developed a sound that blends Afropop, Amapiano and Maskandi, earning him a growing audience.

His efforts are now opening international doors after securing a performance slot at the Moto Moto Festival in Germany this July.

“My desire is to represent Bulawayo and Zimbabwe globally through the sound I have created, music that heals people every day and night,” he added.

Beyond entertainment, the artist is also using his platform to promote positive social values. He encourages young people to avoid crime and substance abuse, while appreciating the importance of family support systems.

“The song Umama is dedicated to my mother. I love her deeply, and this message extends to all mothers. It means a lot that they carried us for nine months, we truly appreciate that. To young people, especially young men, there is still time to pursue meaningful paths. There is more to life than crime and drugs. You can still become someone. I hope many will be inspired to follow a positive path,” he said.

With a growing catalogue and increasing international exposure, Macala represents a new wave of Zimbabwean artists using music to connect, inspire and create opportunities beyond borders.
