PRESIDENT Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid tribute to the late Vice President Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo, describing him as a revered nationalist, trade unionist and co-architect of the historic Unity Accord, as Zimbabwe marks 27 years since his passing.

In a statement, the President said the late Vice President, affectionately known as “Chibwe Chitedza”, “Umdala Wethu” or “Father Zimbabwe”, dedicated his entire adult life to the struggle and service of his countrymen and women, first as a trade unionist who joined active politics with the sole aim of liberating his Motherland from the shackles of colonial bondage.

The revered nationalist and Pan-African freedom fighter demonstrated selflessness and always preached love, unity, peace, hard work and honesty in the service of his People and Nation.

The Head of State said, in memory of his strong commitment to duty; as the Second Republic drives the last phase of the National Development Strategy (2026-2030), memories of this doyen of African liberation shall forever be etched in the hearts and chronicles of Zimbabwe.

President Mnangagwa said his government commits itself to upholding and furthering the values that drove the late nationalist, passing them from generation to generation without any glitch or interruption, as it remains the bedrock of Zimbabwe’s stability and cohesion as a people.

Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo died on July 1, 1999.
