ATHLETES competing at the 22nd Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games in Gaborone, Botswana, have been urged to translate the discipline developed through sport into successful careers beyond the field of play.

The message dominated the official opening ceremony, where organisers described the regional games as a platform for strengthening cooperation among member states while promoting excellence in both sport and education.

Officially opening the Games, Botswana’s Minister of Higher Education, Honourable Prince Maele, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to hosting major international sporting events and challenged athletes to build lasting friendships while preparing for life beyond competition.

“It is with immense pride that I officially open the 2026 CUCSA Games under the stewardship of BOTESSA. We are committed to sporting excellence, and these Games come on the heels of our successful hosting of the World Relays,” he said.

“Let us embrace the spirit of Ubuntu as we compete. We are here to celebrate our youth and their limitless potential.”

Eight countries are competing at this year’s Games, with Eswatini, Angola and Lesotho returning to the regional competition.

Confederation of University and College Sports Associations (CUCSA) President, Mr Mwape Mchimbi, said the Games are about developing disciplined and well-rounded graduates who can make meaningful contributions beyond sport.

“Hosting these Games reflects the strong partnership between the Botswana Government, BOTESSA and CUCSA. While academic excellence remains important, we are equally committed to nurturing sporting talent,” he said.

“The discipline athletes demonstrate on the field of play should be the same discipline they apply in life. The teamwork displayed on the courts should also be reflected in our boardrooms and workplaces.”

Meanwhile, Zambia made a winning start to the volleyball competition with a straight-sets victory over hosts Botswana.

Team Zimbabwe begins its campaign this Tuesday across several sporting disciplines as the regional university games gather momentum.
