THE Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to adequately prepare boxers for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region V Games set for Namibia next month.
Female boxer, Glorious Moyo(21) was part of Zimbabwe’s Region V contingent in Malawi in 2022 but had a dismal show due to shoddy preparations.
With age now not on her side, Moyo says she will use the Gwanda boxing meet to expose budding boxers to the kind of competition they will face in Namibia next month in the Region V Games.
“I was young then, but I am happy the federation has realised a need to adequately prepare our young boxers.”
With a record 10 wins and two losses, upcoming boxer, Sibusiso Phakathi, is relishing the challenge of protecting his record.
“I have a good record that I want to protect, hence I have been making serious preparations for the national tournament.”
Bankrolled by the Hwange Colliery club, the national tournament is expected to put a limelight in Gwanda.
Zimbabwe Boxing Federation’s Technical Official, Steven Masiyambumbi says they want to carry podium finishing athletes, hence the preparatory tournament.
“We have a national tournament in Gwanda and the whole initiative is to prepare our boxers for the Region V games.”
Boxing is on a revitalisation path having hosted national tournaments in different places as part of promoting the sport.
