Exploring Christmas behind bars

Story by Abigirl Tembo

Christmas Day is a time for joy, love and celebration for many, but for those behind bars, it’s a stark reminder of their isolation.

As the ZBC News walked through the prison yards, some inmates were eagerly unwrapping gifts and enjoying treats brought by their loved ones.

However, others sat alone, their faces a picture of sadness and longing.

“I’m grateful that my family remembered me. It’s a small comfort, but it means a lot to me,” said an inmate.

But not all inmates were as fortunate. Many had not received any visitors or gifts, and the loneliness was evident.

“It’s hard to be away from my family on Christmas Day. I have been here for six years and I have never received a single visitor. I just wish someone would come and visit me, just to remind me that I’m not forgotten,” and inmate narrated.

“My family please forgive me. I am serving my time and I am sorry, please come and visit me.”

“I wish someone could come and visit me. Even for 30 minutes only,” said another inmate.

Some lonely prisoners found solace in music and dance, momentarily forgetting their isolation as they showcased their energetic and lively dancing moves, bringing a sense of joy and vibrancy to the prison yard.

As the ZBC News left the prison, it was clear that Christmas behind bars is a complex and emotional experience.

While some inmates found joy and comfort in the visits and gifts from their loved ones, others were left to face the harsh realities of their isolation.
