THE Zimbabwe netball team, the Gems, made a stunning start to their 2024 Africa Netball Cup, edging Uganda 50-49 in a nail-biting encounter in Swakopmund, Namibia, this Monday.
In a match that saw the lead change hands several times, the Gems showed remarkable determination and resilience to emerge victorious.
Trailing 12-14 in the first quarter, Zimbabwe took the lead in the second quarter, albeit by a slender one point margin going to the half time recess at 25-24.
The She Cranes of Uganda however, regained the lead in the third quarter, taking seven point advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Gems were not to be denied, as they staged a remarkable comeback to win the match 50-49 and record their first victory over Uganda for the first time in a decade.
The victory is a boost for the Gems, who are seeking to improve on their bronze medal finish at the last edition held in Botswana.
The team has been working tirelessly to perfect its strategy and technique.
The Gems are back on the court this Tuesday when they take on Lesotho at the Swakopmund Community court.
The 2024 Africa Netball Cup features nine teams battling for honours, with the top two teams from two pools progressing to the semifinals.
