THE Zimbabwe Republic Police’s war against drug and substance abuse is gaining traction, with over four tonnes of marijuana having been seized at a warehouse in Harare.
Three suspects Michael Alfanet (49), Justice Mahope (42) and Loyd Matamba (35) have been arrested for allegedly keeping the confiscated loot at a warehouse in the Msasa Industrial area.
“The police have recovered approximately four tonnes of marijuana, which was hidden in a warehouse in the industrial area. The company had no paperwork explaining why the marijuana was being kept at this warehouse and the conditions under which it was being stored were also questionable, ZRP- National Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.
Besides the marijuana, the police also seized cases of illicit beverages, and Commissioner Nyathi reiterated that they will not back off in the fight against the vice.
“As the law takes its course, we want to emphasise that businesspeople must comply with the law in all their operations. At the end of the day, everyone must assist in maintaining law and order in the country,” he said.
All the suspects are expected to appear at Harare Magistrates Court this Tuesday.
The launch of the Drug and Substance Abuse Elimination Committee and the establishment of rehabilitation centres across the country are among the key efforts by the government to address the growing crisis of drug and substance abuse.
