Ex Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) veterans have paid tribute to the late National Hero Colonel Rtd Tshinga Dube, a stalwart of the liberation struggle who passed away on Thursday in Bulawayo.
Colonel Rtd Tshinga Dube, a renowned military strategist and communications expert, played a pivotal role in ZIPRA’s fight for Zimbabwe’s independence. His journey began in the 1960s, marked by unwavering commitment to the liberation movement. As a pivotal leader in ZAPU’s military wing, Colonel Dube played a vital role in shaping the struggle against colonial rule.
“After receiving military training in Russia, Colonel Dube returned to Zimbabwe to take command of ZIPRA’s communications department. His expertise in this field was instrumental in coordinating the movement’s activities and keeping its forces connected across the vast expanse of the country,” said Zanu PF Politburo member, Cde Richard Ndlovu.
“After Zimbabwe gained independence, Colonel Tshinga Dube continued to serve his country with distinction. He played a crucial role in integrating the three armies – ZIPRA, ZANLA, and the Rhodesian Army – into a unified national army . This monumental task required exceptional leadership and strategic thinking, skills that Colonel Dube possessed in abundance,” noted Brig Gen (Rtd) Abel Mazinyane
Born in Usher, Matobo district in 1941, Colonel Dube’s illustrious career spanned multiple roles, including Member of Parliament for Makokoba constituency, cabinet minister, CEO of Zimbabwe Defense Forces Industries, and board member of National Railways of Zimbabwe.
He was also a devoted benefactor of Highlanders Football Club. Following his passing, a funeral service will be held at his Shangani farm this Sunday, followed by interment at the National Heroes Acre in Harare on October 9. Colonel Dube is survived by wife, Nomathemba Dube, children, and several grandchildren, who will continue to honor his legacy.
