Zimbabwe has received 1 000 metric tonnes of mealie meal from Rwanda to assist in reducing the impact of the El Nino induced drought.
In response to the call for food support made by President Emmerson Mnangagwa who declared the 2023-24 summer cropping season a state of disaster due to the El Nino induced drought, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has donated 1000 tonnes of mealie meal to assist affected communities in Zimbabwe.
Handing over the consignment in Harare this Thursday, Rwanda’s top envoy to Zimbabwe, His Excellency James Musoni said his country will continue to support Zimbabwe.
“After Zimbabwe made a plea for assistance the President of Rwanda responded. As African countries, we have to stand together during good and difficult times. The cooperation between our two countries is strong and we have signed a lot of MOUs which shows that our relations are strong. We remain committed to working with Zimbabwe and to assisting in any way possible,” he said.
The donation was received by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honourable Daniel Garwe.
“This is the spirit of Ubuntu that Rwanda has demonstrated by responding to the international appeal by HE President Mnangagwa in the wake of the El Nino-induced drought. Zimbabwe will forever remember the generous donation. We will ensure that the donation reaches the deserving communities,” said Hon Garwe.
Harare and Kigali have strengthened ties through the signing of over 20 Memoranda of Understanding and agreements on cooperation in different sectors of the economy such as justice, energy and education.
