ZIMBABWE and Malawi are working together to facilitate the smooth repatriation of nationals from both countries as the situation in South Africa continues to result in increased cross-border movement.
Malawian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, General (Retired) Peter Namathanga, visited the Beitbridge Border Post and commended Zimbabwean immigration authorities for efficiently handling the high volume of travellers transiting through the port of entry.
“I came to the border to witness the situation at this port of entry because the volume of people passing through is massive and unprecedented,” he said.
“Immigration officials here are under immense pressure, but they are doing a wonderful job, ensuring smooth passage through Zimbabwe to Mozambique and eventually Malawi. So far, nearly 10 000 people have been repatriated to Malawi, and more than 5 000 are still waiting on the South African side.”
Authorities from both countries say they will continue cooperating to ensure the repatriation process remains safe, orderly and efficient as more people are expected to transit through Beitbridge in the coming days.
