ZIMBABWE started off their 2023 African Games campaign on a high not after the Lady Chevrons beat Rwanda by seven wickets at the Achimota Cricket Club in Accra, Ghana.

With cricket making its debut at the African Games, Zimbabwe made sure they start off on the right note after beating Rwanda by seven wickets in a nail-biting match.

The East Africans won the toss and elected to bat putting on 73 runs on the board in a rain-delayed match that was reduced to 14 overs aside.

Audrey Mazvishaya was the peak of the bowlers with three wickets, while Precious Marange had a brace.

In reply, Modester Mupachikwa preserved the innings with a well-played 38 off 38 bowls, while captain Mary-Anne Musonda was 16 not out after hitting the winning boundary.

“It was a tough match but we stuck to our processes and we got over the line,” she said.

Rwanda coach Zimbabwean Leonard Nhamburo took positives from the defeat.

“We have a young side and if we push the highest-ranked team like this then we are in the right direction,” he said.

Zimbabwe plays Uganda this Friday in their second Pool B match.

In the other Pool B match, Uganda beat Kenya by six wickets.

Action in the other sporting codes start this Friday with chess player Linda Shaba in action.

“I am optimistic I will do well this is my second African Games last time I won bronze so this time I am going for gold,” she said.

Karateka Tanyaradzwa Ziwira will also be in action this Friday.
