A large-scale manhunt is underway for armed robbery suspect Luke Zinyengerere, who staged a dramatic escape from custody at the Harare Magistrates Court this Friday.

Zinyengerere, along with his co-accused Tafadzwa Marondera, had been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at Quest Financial Services in Belgravia, Harare. The heist resulted in the theft of US$720 676, ZAR 10 500, and €120 in cash, as well as a 7.65mm CZ Vzor pistol and three laptops.

The two suspects were being escorted from the courthouse when Zinyengerere’s escape unfolded in what appeared to be a well-orchestrated plan.

Reports suggest that he managed to acquire a firearm, believed to have been smuggled into the court premises which he then used to hold Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) officers at gunpoint.

The fugitive managed to flee through the court’s palisade where he threatened and hijacked a motorist using it as a gateway car.

Meanwhile, the motorist is assisting the police with investigations.

His accomplice, Marondera, was less fortunate. He was swiftly apprehended by security personnel as he attempted to escape by scaling the court’s palisade fence.

ZPCS National Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Meya Kanyezi, confirmed the incident, stating that they are working closely with the Zimbabwe Republic Police to track down and apprehend the suspect.
