EMERGING sporting talent took centre stage at the annual David Ruswa Sports Gala, which concluded at Errymapple International School in Zvishavane on Saturday, providing young athletes from private schools across Zimbabwe with a platform to showcase their abilities before talent scouts.
The grassroots tournament brought together learners from across the country to compete in various sporting disciplines, with the event aimed at identifying and nurturing the next generation of Zimbabwean athletes.
Participants praised the initiative for creating opportunities to display their talent while supporting national sports development.
“When we talk about HBS, this is what we are talking about. This clearly tallies with the government’s vision, and that’s where the country’s developmental trajectory starts. We commend this initiative from Errymapple because it will help improve sports in the country and, at the same time, foster the spirit of unity and development,” a pupil said.
“This initiative is good for us learners because we have an opportunity to showcase our ability in front of scouts. We want to make a name for ourselves in the sporting arena,” a learner said.
Learners were also urged to remain disciplined and determined – a move that will propel the nation to dizzy heights in the sporting arena.
“I want to urge you all who have taken part in this extravaganza to remain determined and disciplined. For a sporting nation to be recognised worldwide, we need athletes who are determined and disciplined. Today, you all have won, and I want the same spirit to continue within you. As organisers, we will make sure that we will continue rendering the necessary support that you need so that we can achieve the Second Republic’s Vision 2030,” Tournament Organiser Mrs Rumbidzai Gengezha said.
During the competitions, learners battled out in various sporting disciplines such as soccer, volleyball, handball, and netball.
Errymapple, Camelot, and Eddrovale excelled as they scooped various awards.
