Southern Region Division One champions promise fireworks

Story by Mthokozisi Dube, Sports Reporter

Southern Region Division One football league champions, Arenel, have promised to make an impact in the Premier Soccer League after they were officially crowned at the weekend.

Having sealed their premier league promotion last week, Arenel continued with their fine run after adding colour to their official crowning moment at the weekend with a one-nil victory over Adachi.

The Sweet Boys were officially crowned Southern Region Division One Champions after the match, with the club leadership making their intentions clear.

“Finally it’s now official that we have made history. What we want our fans to know is that we mean business and we have started preparing for our debut PSL season so we are activating all systems beginning with a technical meeting after this game. We understand there are issues about the venues seeing that we now have more teams in the city, we will look at that but we will use one of the available venues as our home ground,” said the club president, Handsome Ncube.

Club treasurer, Ngonidzashe Madawu said, “Every club has its share of problems but we are not in bad debt as people would want to believe. We are confident we will meet the financial demands of the PSL.”

“We are aware of the challenges which come with playing in the PSL but we are ready as a club. We will try to do our best seeing that everyone is happy about the qualification,” said club secretary, Shepherd Mapamombe.

With a reliable partner in Genesis Sport, the future looks bright for Arenel.

“We do have a lot of partnerships with several teams both in the PSL and division one league but we have chosen to identify with the champions. We are proud of their feat,” said Genesis Sports representative, Zorodzai Damiso.

It is a dream come true for the Sweet Boys who started as a social club before joining the lower leagues.

Meanwhile, former premiership side TelOne look is on course for another dance with the big boys in the topflight with a healthy six-point lead over second-placed Tongogara with two games to go before the end of the season.

The Wifi Boys who were inactive last weekend got an easy three points after Zvishavane-based side Loss control pulled out of the league.

In the Eastern Region, the winner will be confirmed on the last day of the season with Bikita Minerals separated by just a point from second-placed FC Wangu Mazodze and Tenax who are third.

Affectionately known as the Lithium Boys, Bikita Minerals dropped two vital points after a one-all draw with Midway.

In the Northern Region, log leaders Black Mambas tumbled after a share of the spoils with Mwors reducing the gap separating them with second-placed Chegutu Pirates to two points.

The two sides are set to meet in the penultimate match of the season this weekend.
