Southern Africa hopeful of retaining PAP presidency

Zimbabwe’s Chief Fortune Charumbira is contesting for re-election as the Pan African Parliament (PAP) president after winning the Southern Caucus Nomination last Friday.
The voting process, which started at 9 am ends at 12 midday.
Chief Charumbira is expected to retain the post which is held on a rotational basis with Southern Africa holding the post until 2025.
Professor Massouda Laghdaf from North Africa is contesting for the 1st vice presidency, while Honourable Djidda Mahamat from Central Africa is vying for 4th vice presidency.
It will be conducted in a closed session according to the PAP rules of procedure.
The convening of Extraordinary Session of the PAP is an outcome of the Executive Council’s decision after the African Union Summit held in February this year.
The ministerial session, in deliberating on the worrying situation at the Pan-African Parliament, called for an urgent extraordinary session to fill the vacant positions.
PAP was set up to ensure the full participation of Africans in the economic development and integration of the continent.
Comprising five representatives from member states, the goal is to share ideas on how to solve problems and challenges facing the continent.
