GWERU – THE Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of veterans of the liberation struggle, with a renewed call for freedom fighters to take full advantage of empowerment schemes being rolled out under the Second Republic.

Speaking during an interactive session with veterans of the liberation struggle in Gweru this Friday, the Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, Senator Monica Mavhunga, emphasised that government remains seized with the welfare concerns of the gallant sons and daughters of the soil.

“We, as government, are fully aware of your challenges. I understand them because I am one of you. We are currently processing school fees payments, and plans are at an advanced stage to introduce a dedicated medical scheme for our veterans,” she said.

She further highlighted that the Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube, had facilitated the allocation of 40 residential stands in Kwekwe, with more expected to be made available in Gokwe.

“We also have the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme, specifically targeting our veterans. These are not just resources for domestic use they are opportunities to start income-generating projects,” Senator Monica Mavhunga said.

The interface underscored the inclusive development agenda being spearheaded by the Second Republic, with the Midlands leadership expressing unwavering support for veterans.

Honourable Owen Ncube lauded the liberation war heroes for their continued patriotism and steadfast support for the leadership of President Mnangagwa, despite efforts by detractors to sow disunity.

“Fellow comrades, the Midlands Province commends the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle who continue to lead by example by remaining solidly behind the leadership of His Excellency, President Mnangagwa despite hopeless efforts by enemies of the state to cause disunity. As you may be aware, the Zimbabwean economy is on a sound economic recovery and growth trajectory as confirmed by multi-lateral financial institutions like the World Bank.,” he said.

Since its inception, the Second Republic has implemented various schemes to uplift the livelihoods of the veterans of the liberation struggle, in honour of their sacrifices that delivered Zimbabwe from colonial bondage.

These include residential land allocations, farming inputs support, educational assistance for dependants, and a dedicated ministry to streamline the delivery of services.

The message from the Government remains clear: no effort will be spared in ensuring that the country’s heroes and heroines are empowered and honoured in practical, sustainable ways.
