THE SADC Extraordinary Summit of Heads and Government is underway at the Parliament building in Mt Hampden.
In his opening remarks; Executive Secretary of SADC H.E Mr Elias Magosi spoke of the need to urgently address the situation that continues to unfold in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
He said as the region meets almost a year since the deployment of SAMIDRC on December 15 2023, leaders will receive an update on the operations of the mission in restoring peace and security in that area.
He added that the summit is also expected to deliberate on the political and security situation in Mozambique following the violence that
erupted immediately after the election held on October 9 this year.
Chairperson of the regional bloc, President Emmerson Mnangagwa stated that the region must remain steadfast in finding lasting peace and security within the region.
He added that the collective approach drives the nations of SADC forward in the development and peace agenda calling on warring parties in Eastern DRC to honour the ceasefire agreements.
The Chairperson states that Zimbabwe stands ready to support all nations in ensuring peace and stability.
Nearly 7 million people have been displaced by the conflict in the DRC.
