THE Zimbabwe Sables will launch their World Rugby Nations Cup campaign against Tonga on Saturday at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park in Denver, Colorado.
The tournament marks Zimbabwe’s biggest overseas rugby assignment in recent years, with the Sables also scheduled to face the United States and Canada over the next three weekends.
The campaign follows last month’s 40-0 defeat to South Africa A, a match head coach Pieter Benade’s side has used as valuable preparation ahead of the Rugby World Cup.
Tonga are expected to provide a formidable opening test, with the Pacific Islanders renowned for their physical approach and long-established rugby pedigree.
The Sables will be aiming for a positive start before taking on the United States on July 11 and Canada on July 18.
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union has named a squad led by captain Hilton Mudariki for the three-match campaign.
Among the key players selected are Ian Prior, Tapiwa Mafura, Cleopas Kundiona, Garry Potter and Jason Frasser, who are expected to play pivotal roles as Zimbabwe seeks a successful Nations Cup campaign.
