RUSHINGA Rural District Council is targeting to unlock mining revenue in the district with investment promotion being given priority by the new crop of councillors.

The council has set sights on ramping up investment in various sectors of the district’s economy after the election of 33 new councillors into office.

“We will start with the creation of a strategic plan for the next 5 years and it will guide us in our work. Also in the strategic plan, there will be ways in which we want to enhance our wealth. We want to lure investors, what we call investment promotion. We have calcite and lime manganese, so we want to promote investment because that is what we can use to uplift our country,” said Rushinga RDC chairperson, Alderman Maja Mafunga.

In crafting its strategic plan, the local authority will be guided by the national development strategy one blueprint, with devolution playing a pivotal role in providing enablers for social and economic development.

Rushinga RDC chief executive officer, Mr Mungororo Mazai added, ‘We think with this new council and their zeal to uplift the economy, we will make a local investment plan. Again, they want it to made clear how minerals mined in this district enrich it, instead of them just going out raw. We know historically our district has been lagging maybe because it’s on the periphery.”

Growth potential has been identified in the apiculture sector as there are outlying forests to support honey production as well as opportunities for beneficiation of tamarind and baobab fruits that are widely available in Rushinga.
