THE Zimbabwe Sables ended their World Rugby Nations Cup campaign with a spirited performance despite going down 23-19 to Canada in Winnipeg on Sunday.
Canada dominated the opening half, taking a 13-0 lead into the interval through a converted try and two penalties.
The hosts increased their advantage early in the second half when Mason Flesch crossed over, leaving Zimbabwe with a mountain to climb.
The Sables responded in the 56th minute as Liam Larkan scored their opening try, with Ian Prior adding the conversion to cut the deficit.
Canada restored their cushion when Calixto Martinez crossed for a try, which was converted by Nelson.
Zimbabwe refused to give up, with Cleopas Kundiona scoring in the 70th minute before Prior converted to keep the Sables within striking distance.
A late try from Dion Khumalo set up a tense finish, but Canada held on to secure a 23-19 victory.
Although the Sables finished the tournament without a win, they produced competitive performances against higher-ranked opposition, providing encouraging signs ahead of preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Zimbabwe’s build-up will continue in November when the Sables compete in the second phase of the World Rugby Nations Cup, where they are scheduled to host three second-tier nations in England as part of their preparations for next year’s Rugby World Cup in Australia.
