Rocks keep close eye on Mountaineers in Logan Cup

Story by Raynald Ngwarati

SOUTHERN Rocks continue to pile pressure on log leaders Mega Market Mountaineers after outclassing third-placed Mashonaland Eagles by seven wickets in the Logan Cup this Saturday.

Defending champions Mashonaland Eagles were thrown further adrift off the top spot of the Logan Cup 2023/24 season this weekend after succumbing to a seven wicket defeat by Southern Rocks at Old Hararians Sports Club.

The reigning champions looked stronger from the onset, with twin tons from Kudzai Maunze and Tadiwanashe Marumani helping them declare on 445 runs for the loss of nine wickets.

The declaration in turn haunted them as the Rocks picked up momentum from then on scoring 468 runs all out, a surplus of 23 more runs than their opponents.

Eddie Byrom and Richmond Mutumbami responded with centuries of their own for the Rocks to heap up the pressure on the Eagles batters.

The Eagles failed to cope with the pressure in their second innings as Tendai Chisoro ripped through the Mashonaland-based side’s batting unit as he claimed six scalps to dismiss the Eagles for a lowly 162 runs.

Chisoro, who was voted the man of the match, ended the match with 8 wickets for 130 runs laying the groundwork for his team to romp to an emphatic victory over the defending champions.

Chasing 134 runs on Day Four was not much of a tough ask for the Rocks, and their batsmen showed intent pouncing on anything loose to cross the target before lunch.

With the victory, the Rocks moved to within just a victory off the pace of log leaders Mountaineers after 6 rounds of matches.
