THE Air Force of Zimbabwe commander, Air Marshal Jacob Nzvede has rallied his troops to play a role in the national fight against drug and substance abuse.

In his address,  Air Marshal Nzvede said the fight against drug and substance abuse is a collective responsibility as the scourge is affecting every sphere of Zimbabwe’s society.

“Outside the threat of misuse of weapons in criminal activities, a worrying concern is the abuse of alcohol, drugs and intoxicating substances by individuals armed with service weapons. The President and Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, His Excellency Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa recently launched the drug and substance abuse action plan which recognises the threats posed by such vices to the moral fabric of the nation. To this end a clarion call was made for all of us to contribute to the national efforts to fight this scourge,”  he said.

The shooting competition attracted both uniformed and civilian participants.

He added, “Over and above the need to sharpen the shooting skills, we are cognisant that shooting is a sporting discipline which is recognised at international level up to the highest level, the Olympics. It is in this spirit that this competition is open to civilian participants and teams under the umbrella of the Zimbabwe National Rifles Association.”

The AFZ shooting competition was held at Cleveland Range in Harare this Friday.

This year’s Commander AFZ shooting competition was conducted under the theme: “Enhancing skills at arms for the defence of our national sovereignty, in pursuit of Vision 2030.”
