South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO)’s Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has become the first elected female President of Namibia, after winning elections held on the 27th of last month.
Official results released by the Namibia Electoral Commission reveal that Nandi-Ndaitwah won by more than 57 percent of votes cast, with her closest rival Panduleni Itula getting 26 percent.
She will join an exclusive club as the third elected female president in Africa after Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and Sahle-Work Zewde of Ethiopia.
She also joins other African female presidents such as the current Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan who took over after the death of President John Magufuli, Malawi’s Joyce Hilda Banda, Slyvie Kiningi of Burundi, Gabon’s Rose Francine Rogombe, Catherine Samba Panza of Central African Republic and Ivy Matsepe-Cassaburi of South Africa.
Mauritius also had two female presidents Agnes Monique Ohsan Bellepeau and Ameenah Gurib-Fakim.
The ruling SWAPO also won the majority, securing 51 of the 96 elected seats, while the IPC won 20 seats and will be the official opposition.
